My summer dress! The pattern is Jorna Tank Dress by Jenna Brand. It is a very simple dress with basically just one piece of pattern. The front and back is the same except for the neckline. The dress has three different length options: tank, jumper, and dress. I cut the jumper in size XS but since I’m not tall it becomes knee-length dress on me. The neckline and armholes are finished with facing so they are a bit stiffer than the usual knit band finish, but it gives a very clean appearance. Instead of using the facing pattern, I cut the facing using the same front/back pattern […]

Kate dress (and thoughts about sewing everyday clothes)
Next from my growing Style Arc pattern stash! This is Kate dress, a wrap dress inspired by Kate Middleton’s engagement dress. It has several reviews on PatternReview who mostly highly recommend it. As usual for Style Arc patterns, I cut size 6. I shortened the bodice about 2 cm, but next time I might reduce it to 1 cm. The original hem is quite long and I had to shorten it about 20 cm. I left out the sleeves at the end of sleeves and lengthened the ties about 15 cm. My fabric is polyester knit with abstract floral […]
Zebra print Lady Skater dress
To tell you the truth, I’ve never heard of Kitschy Coo before they released the Lady Skater dress pattern a few months ago. Every version of the dress that popped up around the net is looking so good that I couldn’t resist joining the bandwagon. Here’s the description of the Lady Skater dress pattern from the Kitschy Coo website: “This funky yet functional knit dress has a fitted bodice, scooped banded neckline, a curved flared knee-length skirt, and options for trimmed cap sleeves, or banded ¾ length sleeves or long sleeves. It’s designed to flatter the figure with a waistline that hits […]
Ikat Sigma dress
I’ve been hearing lots of good things about Papercut Patterns, recently they have just launched the new Constellation Collection in discount price so I thought it was the perfect time to get my first Papercut pattern! They also have free shipping which I like because the pattern price is really the amount I’m going to pay. I especially love the pretty package, a brown box with cut out details and hanger shaped closure. The pattern pieces and the instructions are printed on brown recycled paper and the instructions can be cut and folded neatly into a mini booklet. So neat! This is […]
Shweshwe Hazel dress
Sometime ago I got a message from Emily who has just opened her online sewing store in South Africa. She offered me a few metres of Shweshwe fabric of my choice to use for my sewing. Maybe I’m ignorant, but it was the first time I’ve ever heard about Shweshwe fabric so of course I was quite interested. When I browsed around her store and saw the fabric, I realized that I’ve seen them before but I just didn’t know the name of that fabric. The more you know! Shweshwe is 100% cotton that is preserved with starch in the […]
Fruits print jersey dress (Vogue 1351)
I actually finished this dress almost two weeks ago and have been wearing it almost everyday since then. It is made of jersey and extremely comfortable in spite of the dressy look. It is basically a long tank top! The pattern is Vogue 1351 by DKNY. From the pattern envelope: Lined, pullover dress has draped front neckline, closing-fitting, bias front bodice and skirt, and invisible side zipper. The pattern calls for bias front bodice and skirt, but my jersey fabric has this delightful fruits print that goes in one direction. Since the fabric is stretchy, I didn’t cut on bias […]
Pineapple dress (Vogue 8901)
I wanted to make a quick summer dress project and after browsing at my pattern stash, I found this Vogue 8901. From the pattern envelope: “Dress has no side seams, close-fitting, lined bodice extending to side back, pleated skirt, side front seams, narrow hem, and invisible back zipper. B: lined skirt. C: bodice front cut on crosswise grain, back hook & eye closing, and zipper for skirt only.” The bodice of the dress is overlapped on the side and the skirt is actually just pleated rectangles. Looks simple enough! I cut view A, size 6 on bust, tapered to 10 on waist and hip. The […]
Summer knit dress (McCall’s 6700)
I’ve been busy this week since Monte came, house-training him and such, that I don’t have too much time for my sewing machine. But yesterday I really want to make something instead of wiping dog pee off the floor, so here’s a quick dress for an instant gratification. The pattern is McCall’s 6700 from the Spring 2013 line. From the pattern envelope: “Pullover dress has fitted, mock wrap bodice, shoulder ties, elasticized shoulders and raised (seamed) waist, fitted, narrow hem, thread carriers and self belt.” This dress is designed for medium weight stretch knits and I was happy to find […]
Dreaming of summer (Butterick 5601)
A couple of weeks ago I came home to a surprise package from Latvia in my mailbox with this bundle of three wonderful fabrics inside! As it turned out, these fabrics are gift from lovely Iveta of Wonderosa. She wrote to me last month to offer me a present, any kind of fabric from her etsy shop, Scandinavian Textiles. Thank you so much dear Iveta! I’ve fallen in love with one particular fabric. It is medium weight cotton fabric by Svanefors Textil, a Swedish company who makes home decor fabric in wonderful design. However, I don’t want to make a […]
Velvet Tiramisu dress
After seeing so many pretty versions of this dress -check out this delicious purple number by lladybird-, I’m jumping into the Tiramisu dress bandwagon! If you haven’t heard about this pattern, this is the first pattern from Steph‘s new pattern line, Sewing Cake. From the description of Tiramisu Dress: “Knit knee-length dress with front surplice (mock wrap) neckline, short kimono sleeves and an easily customizable midriff section. The skirt features in-seam pockets and falls in the soft folds of a vintage half-circle skirt. The pattern includes optional stripes placement guide, cup sizing A-D and a bust alteration line.” It is […]
