Red cardigan

Red is such a hard color to photograph! I just finished this red cardigan yesterday. The knit fabric is indeed wonderful. It is a bit transparent but surprisingly warm with fuzzy surface and tiny heart-shaped holes all over it. Too bad the pictures don’t show the fabric well.

The pattern is Pris, I bought it as PDF pattern from Tamanegi Kobo, a Japanese pattern shop. The pattern is in Japanese, but the drawings and diagrams made it really easy to construct it. The original pattern was mid-hip length, but I lengthened it about 20 cm because i don’t like anything that stop on the middle of my bottom. I also omitted the left chest pocket for a simpler look.

The cardigan has a slight gathering on the back that looks really cute. In the original pattern, the gathering will rest on the upper part of the bottom, accentuating it. But in my version, the gathering makes the long cardigan has a slight balloon-like shape.

I made the cardigan on my Janome sewing machine, using zigzag stitches with width set on 1 and length on 3 as I usually do for sewing jersey. The raw edges are simply zigzagged. I’ve used this technique several times for sewing knits and it worked fine.

The new length makes the cardigan can also be worn as a tunic or dress in my case. It is warm enough for the upcoming spring, but not too bulky as winter clothes. The shape is simple that means it can be worn over many outfits. Likey!

PS: Sorry for my sad face, I got a killer headache last night! (>_<)

The cardigan looks great! I actually liked it so much that I just bought the pdf pattern to try it! The problem now is where to find nice knit fabric. Do you know any online shops with a good offer on knits?

    Btw, I love your blog!

Thank you Vanessa! Unfortunately I rarely buy fabrics online since it is much easier for me to just go to fabric stores here in Tokyo.
Hope you will have fun sewing the cardigan!

  • This one sure is comfortable! I have one very similar, but it’s bought. I’ll make a pattern out of it and make another one by myself.

Please do try! I was intimidated too at the beginning, but then I tried making some simple t-shirt for Sidra and it worked! So I moved on to this cardigan for myself. Cutting the pretty red fabric was terrifying! o_O

  • It’s lovely. The length and shape are perfect for you -the whole outfit is really chic! Beautiful work.

  • The cardigan looks so comfy! I can imagine the red being really pretty and it’s such a nice contrast during this rather grey season. When I need to photograph something red I edit the photo a bit by reducing saturation of red. It makes my photos look less squeaky. All other colors are still as they are but the red parts are less dominant.
