Everybody is making a tie-front dress, so am I

Tie-front dress
The Mociun tie-front dress has been going around for a while, its easy and adorable design has inspired many crafters to make their own version. I still have heaps of fabrics that my mother gave me last summer, so I use one of them to make my own tie-front dress. There’s still many of those fabrics, and it seems that I will need some time to consume them all.

The shape of the dress is very simple, the idea with the tie-front is just brilliant. I’m sure that Caitlin Mociun is a genius. My version is looser than Mociun’s as I don’t like fitted dresses. The bodice has a couple of small darts on the side and the skirts are just big rectangles gathered on the top. Sounds like all of my dresses! I also made a couple of hidden pockets on the side seams.

The fabric is cotton batik, it’s amazingly comfortable and it smells so good. I wasn’t sure whether the colour and pattern will suit me, but when I put on the dress, I instantly fell in love with it! I wear my new glasses in the pictures. I’m short-sighted with -3.00 on each eye and I usually wear contact lenses. But last week I bought the glasses and really liked it, so I’ve been wearing it since then. I think it makes me look quirkier, no?

  1. Hi,
Love this dress; but am not so great at drafting patterns… Do you think that you could post a pattern up? I’d be so pleased…

    THanks,

    1. Actually I drafted the pattern myself. But you can use any loose-shaped dress with high waistline as a base an add the tie-front. A lot of Japanese pattern has the shape, maybe you can check one of the Stylish Dress Book series.

  2. You are adorable in your wonderful dress and new glasses.

I don’t know that pattern. Where do I get that?

    1. Thanks! But I don’t really understand what you mean about the pattern.
I drafted the pattern myself after seeing similar dress by Mociun :)

  3. Absolutely love your dress .. and the design of the fabric is really great! Where is the fabric from?

I wish you a nice day…it’s sunny over here in Europe, I hope at your place too :)

    1. The fabric is batik from Indonesia :)
Today is snowing in Tokyo, in mid-April! So strange. But I hope tomorrow will be sunny :)

      1. hui, snow, now? is this common for this time of the year?
wow, than I know that when I hopefully will visit Indonesia one time I surely will buy some fabric, it looks really special!

  4. Love that dress! It’s so flattering and wonderful :) and your glasses are beautyful too (ehem and they look just like the ones I got last november..). It’s time to show the fashion geek ;) I think it’s so much fun to combine the geeky glasses with a super lady like dress or bag or whatever, the contradiction is my best best friend since last november :) hihi

    have a super nice weekend

  5. Hello! I just found your blog yesterday!! And I LOVE IT! Oh and your dresses are SO AMAZING! I want to learn how to sew and I was wondering how you learned? Did someone teach you or did you teach yourself? How could I get started?
    :)

    1. Thank you, Lauren!
I learned sewing by myself a long time ago, making simple clothes, dolls, etc. Then I went into a fashion school to learn more. If you like sewing clothes, I really recommend Burdastyle.com, as it’s a good community for people who like sewing. There’s also a lot of free and simple patterns to try :)

  6. hehehe I made one of those too! Although mine can be worn forwards or backwards and is more fitted. I love yours! Very gorgeous. I love batik fabric but I have yet to find any as nice as yours.

    1. I remember your gorgeous blue dress! It really fitted you well and I love the versatility of it!
My mother collected batik when she was younger, and I’m her only child who loves to sew so I guess I’m lucky to have access to all (well, most of) her fabrics!

  7. Beautiful tie-front dress! I recently bought a real Mociun dress on sale and compared it to the mockup I made. Caitlin Mociun is indeed a genius, because the tie-front is not a separate piece of fabric, the whole bodice is one piece! Its amazing!

    1. I saw that there’s a seam in the back of the Mociun’s tie, and wondered about it. Now I know! How amazing!

    1. Glad that you agree about the glasses, Yoshimi! I used to think that I look like a sad nerd with glasses on, but nerd look is kinda trendy now so I guess it’s time for me to wear one again :P

    1. My face always look sad when I don’t grin widely. I can make it look better when the light is good. But today is cloudy, and when I don’t have good lighting, I tend to smile to make the pictures look better :D
