I think I’m inspired by madras dresses that I’ve seen a lot lately. So when I found this madras 2 m cut fabric in Yuzawaya, I snatched it right away and carried on to make this dress.
This dress is sort of my experiment of making clothes without pattern. I measured myself and drew straight on the fabric. The checks pattern really helped a lot for positioning.
The top part stops above the bust, and the bottom part is just a pair of ruffled long rectangles. The sleeves are a pair of long rectangles, each folded in half and then ruffled. That way they don’t need to be hemmed. I added a loop and fabric-covered button on the front closure and that was it!

Hello! Love the dress and would like to make a similar one with a thrifted battik fabrik. Could you explain some more how you did the sleeves (a drawing would be awesome) ^^
also I see that the neckline has some extra peice of fabric on the inside, is that a way of hemming?
Thank you very much!
Hi there, the sleeves are shape like a long rectangle with every corners rounded. Then you fold the rectangle in the middle length and make gathering stitches along the rounded side. The folded side will then be the hem of the sleeves.
I guess the extra fabric that you see inside the neckline is the neckline facing? Yes, it is a way of finishing the neckline.
I hope I could make a drawing of the sleeves sometime :)
Great! now I get it! Thank you very much! I’ll put a pic in your Flikr pool when Im done :)
