Now that I know that Japanese knitting needles size are different than US needles, I finally use them for my first ‘proper’ knitting! My husband likes the color orange and he wants a scarf with stripes of orange on it, so I made it with these super bulky orange and beige yarn and JP15/6.6 mm knitting needles. The yarn is a mix of nylon and wool and it has different widths on it, creating some interesting bumpy texture to the scarf. I knitted it in simple stockinette stitches, so the scarf kinda rolls into a tube. To complement the scarf, […]

Japanese knitting needles and a new project
Yesterday I just found out the reason why Sidra’s hat is too small (and why my fingers hurt when I’m knitting). The reason is: I didn’t know that Japanese knitting needles sizes are different than US sizes! D’oh. It means that all this time I’ve been struggling to knit with needles that are 2 sizes too small. No wonder that my fingers hurt! I was just beginning to wonder that I really had no talent for knitting, it was so hard knitting those yarns. Then I found this site that says: “Japanese needle sizes are different from another countries. We […]
Yellow hat
I finally finished it in about three days, and it turned out to be, uh, a bit too small for Sidra. Darn it. But as usual, he’s very excited about the new hat. I added a pompom on top of the hat and another one of those bug button on the hat. This time, the button is a blue kuwagata-mushi (another kind of helmet beetle). Because it’s too small, the hat doesn’t serve any other purpose than being cute. It can’t be pulled down to cover the ears or forehead. However, for serving the purpose of being cute, I think […]
more knitting
Yes, that’s the yellow yarn again. I call them my learning yarn. After I finished my first knitting project, I still have 4 skeins of them that I use for trying out stitches. Yoshimi has so kindly sent me a pack of JP10 double-pointed needles, so I am now learning to knit in the round. At first, it seemed so scary, tth there are needles everywhere! The few initial stitches are still wobbly, but I think the rest of it is okay. When it reaches a certain height, I will begin to learn knitting decrease stitches. Anyway, I’ve also finished sewing […]
Yellow Muffler
I finally finished my first knitting project, it’s a muffler for Sidra! Actually, I still didn’t know what I’m going to make when I began knitting the yellow yarn. I was thinking of making a long thin scarf for myself. But Sidra saw me playing with yarn and ‘chopsticks’, and after observing the yellow thing dangling on the stick, he declared that whatever it was, it would be his. Okay then. The completed muffler measured about 10×53 cm and it’s entirely in knit stitches. I’m still trying to get the hang of purl stitches (and other stitches). I managed to […]
Getting somewhere
Whatever it is, it’s getting longer.
One Rookie Knitter
I’ve never, ever, learned to knit before. I’ve never even encountered a single knitting needles in my entire life. However, after residing in Japan for the last 7 months and witnessing so many knitted objects, clothing, and books around me, not to mention that knitted stuffs are very useful for autumn/winter, I started to get curious. After all, I need something that I can do outside the sewing room. I went out and acquired these things: 2 knitting books (one is very basic, and the other is my eye candy), some yellow yarn (I don’t what they are), and a […]
