Hats and brooches

P1120188

A friend of mine just got an operation done on her head. She had to have all all her long hair shaved and stayed a long time in the hospital. I decided to make her a hat, hopefully it will cheer her up. Initially I wanted to knit a cap, but apparently my knitting and crochet skill has gone back to zero, so I made her a fabric hat instead.

Sometime ago I’ve made these denim hats from the book ‘Idea Hat Recipe’, so I looked for other patterns in it. The concept of the book is hats that inspired by cakes, a weird concept but the hats are indeed pretty cute. The pattern that I chose is called Macaron thé russe, which is actually a cap with tilted down brim. The fabric is linen with printed cotton for the lining.

Note about the pattern: I didn’t add seam allowances to the pattern as it seemed big, then I sewed it with 0.8 cm allowance. At the end, the hat still needed some elastics sewed at the back to make it fit.

I added a detachable brooch from some lace, fabric scraps, and buttons. Actually I wanted to make a flower brooch, [...]

Oilcloth bags and girl's dress & hat set

Oilcloth bags

This is a bag that I made as birthday gift for a friend of Sidra. The bag is reversible with oilcloth fabric in different Curious George pattern on both sides and has detachable straps.

Actually it is so hard to find a perfect gift for a 7 years old boy! I decided on this bag because the shape is simple and the fabric is easy to clean. It is also can be used to carry swimwear and can be toss around on the beach. As it is reversible, the bag can be easily turned over when the inside is wet or dirty.

Hopefully the boy will find the bag useful. However, when Sidra saw the bag, he announced that he wanted the same bag. So here’s another one for him.

When I bought the oilcloth fabrics, I also found this pink fabric with vintage-inspired kid’s clothing and pattern pieces on it. It is so cute that I just had to buy it, it is so perfect for little girls, although I’ve never made little girls’ stuffs before. Fortunately Sidra’s friend has this cute little sister, so I can make my first little girl’s dress to give to [...]

Purple dress and white hat

2

Now I should be making something else, a bag for Sidra’s art equipments, but I’ve been to 2 local fabric stores and didn’t find any suitable fabrics. Those unsuccesful trips resulted in purchase of other not so necessarily things, like these purple and white cotton fabrics. I guess Sidra has to wait for his bag next week, Mama’s being selfish today.

The purple dress is very simple, I used a basic bodice block to make the upper part. The lower parts are just 2 rectangles the width of the fabric, The front rectangle is cut in half for the opening. I was experimenting with unfinished edges (or maybe I’m just lazy), so I didn’t use any facings, except for self-facings for the front opening. To prevent further fraying, the raw edges are double stitched about 1 cm from the edges. The buttons are all in different shapes.

The hat pattern is from a Japanese pattern book, but I made the brim slightly wider. The fabric is Indian cotton. It was a very quick sewing, and I really like the result. I think I’ll make another hat in black.

Bodice pattern is JJ’s Bodice Sloper/Block from Burdastyle. [...]

Grey things

Grey things

I finally finished the grey scarf that I mentioned in this post. The yarn is grey wool with little bits of colorful tweed on it, knitted in 3.5 mm knitting needles. So far, it is the smallest needles that I’ve used and it sure took a long time as I wanted a long scarf. At the end, the finished piece used up all three skeins that I had and is measured about 12×200 cm after blocking. I learnt a lot of things while making this scarf, and I must say that I’m quite proud with it, the lacey pattern is looking so pretty.

These wool yarns in 3 different colors were supposed to be Sidra’s sweater, but it turned out that I have no patience in knitting a clothing. The same row after row after row and after 6 rows (errr), I lost my patience. So I use the grey yarn to make a pair of mittens and a hat for myself.

The pattern of the mittens is said to be inspired by a pair worn by the female protagonist in the movie ‘Twilight’. I’m no fan of the movie and haven’t seen it myself, but [...]

Fingerless mitts and black hood

Fingerless mitts

I’ve finished my fingerless mittens, it was such an unbelievably easy and quick project! Actually they end up a little bit too big and look like a mismatch from different pairs. The right one has so many greens in it while the left one has a big part of black along the middle. The thing about the Noro yarn is that it has so many colors in it that one mitten is not enough to accommodate all the colors. Maybe I should’ve used two skeins and tried to match the colors. And since I’m usually smaller than most regular sizes, I should remember to cast on fewer stitches next time. But I love them anyway. I think I can get away with them as mismatched slouchy mittens.

I also made this black hood a few days ago. It was knitted flat, then folded and sewed along the back. Knitted with chunky yarn and big 7mm knitting needles, this hood is also a very easy and quick project. The black yarn has some kind of silvery things going on in it, but I guess the camera didn’t capture it really well.

Mitten pattern is Noro Fingerless [...]
