Yet another floral bra

One shoulder dress

One shoulder dress

I’ve been cutting up my old clothing again! Here’s another dress that I made last year but I’ve rarely worn since. I guess I have problem with showing bare shoulder….

I cut it up to make another non-stretch bra. This time I added a trim along the bustline, made with white stretch lace. The pattern is my usual one, Pin-up Girls Classic Bra #1230 in size 30B with the same alteration as the previous non-stretch bra. I didn’t line the lower cup this time, but topstitch the seam allowances and trim them close to the seamline. This is the suggested way as in the Pin-Up Girls instruction. The red notions are bought as a kit from Merckwaerdigh at Etsy.

This is a pretty pretty bra that are not suitable to wear under close fitting clothing because of the ruffled lace. But sometimes I want to have a pretty bra like this but don’t want to spend money on something that I don’t wear often. So it is nice that I am able to make them myself. What a perfect excuse!

P1210573.JPG I’ve used some of the red elastics for other projects, so the panties aren’t finished yet because I ran out of the elastics. Very annoying, I should have planned it better.

There were several questions about the fit of these bras, so here’s a picture of me wearing them. I hope it can show how they fit me. You can (probably) see that there are wrinkles around the seamline, which is caused by the non-stretch material. Sorry if the picture is all blurred out! (^_^;)

Floral lingerie set

I’ve only made one set of lingerie before, but here I am already starting to make experiment. I wanted to know if making a pair of bra from ordinary fabric without stretch is possible, so I made this yesterday after finishing Sidra’s jeans.

Floral tube top

You know, sometimes you make something that looks good but somehow you never wear just because you never feel like wearing it. It’s the case of this tube top that I made about a year ago. I think I wore it once after that. It looks good, but maybe I just don’t feel too comfortable wearing something that leave my shoulders completely bare. So I decided to cut up this top for my bra experiment.

The pattern is the same as my first bra, Pin-up Girls Classic Bra #1230 in size 30B. The top has pretty embroideries on the edge that I use for the upper cup. I added about 0.5 cm to the length of the upper cup to anticipate the non-stretchiness. Other than that, there was no pattern alteration.

The band was cut on bias, but I did line it with powernet to make it stronger. I use bra notions kit in jeans blue from Merckwaerdigh at Etsy, it has enough supplies to make one pair of bra and panties, not including fabric. I also use underwires, salvaged from my old bra. It does give the bra more shape.

The finished bra is not as smooth as bra made with lycra. With all those embroideries, they are not suitable to be worn under T-shirt. But they look very pretty and surprisingly comfortable! I don’t know if it’s because I don’t have too many things to support, so maybe things will be different for the more well-endowed ladies. I think the bra would be perfect to be worn under thin loose blouse or with the floral straps peeking.

I also made a matching panties. The pattern is from a Japanese pattern book that I borrowed from local library sometime ago. The panties are cut on bias, so  they are stretchy. I love this floral set! The fabric definitely wanted to be a pair of bra than a tube top!

A couple more panties that I made before. The white one is made completely of stretch lace. Very easy sewing. It has high waist and is very sexy, leaving half of the lower butt hanging out. They are not very comfortable for me, but I guess there are people who love this style of panties.

The pink one is made with lycra and stretch lace. They are originally in white, but I dyed them red which resulted in this pink colour. Maybe I should let them soak longer for the red color. I also found out that my body doesn’t like working with dyes and chemical, I was coughing a lot when using the dye. Note to self: use mask for next dyeing project.

I finally finished my bra! It is a matching set with the panties that I made a couple of days ago. The bra pattern is bought from Elingeria and it is called Pin-up Girls Classic Bra #1230. This is a pattern for a classic bra with full band that can be made with or without underwires. The instruction booklet is really helpful and perfect for a newbie like me.

I don’t like bra with underwires or padded cups, so I choose to make mine without underwires. According to the instruction booklet, I am  size 30B, which is a size that I have never found in the stores. Usually I wear size 32B, so this time I had the chance to make size 30B. I’ve also bought the Bra kit white/mandarin along with the pattern, the supplies are said to be enough for one bra and two panties. The quality is wonderful and they were gliding smoothly under my sewing machine foot.

Pattern

Before I made the bra (and even bought the pattern), I’ve read a lot of reviews and tutorials to familiarize myself with the terms and sewing order. There is a bunch of helpful tutorials on lingerie making in this tutorial blog by Sigrid. You should check out all her tutorials! I found her via Millie’s post.

Making the bra was so much fun! As I said before, the instruction booklet is wonderful. This is also my first time using 3 steps zigzag stitch on my machine. It is used to secure the picot edge elastic to the edge of the bra. I only made one alteration, which is using double layer of lycra for the lower cup so the seamline is invisible from the inside and the lower cup is not too transparent. I learned to do this from Sigrid’s tutorials Sigrid’s tutorials.

The panties pattern was bought from Merckwaerdigh at Etsy. It is called Merckwaerdigh Mix30 with bra, panties, and knickers pattern in several sizes, mine is size S. I also bought bra notions kit (without fabric) in two colors, the elastics are not as soft as the ones from ElingeriA, but the colors are bolder.

The finished bra fits wonderfully! Although the cups have no underwires, they have enough support and are very comfortable. The panties are also very comfortable, not to mention that they are beautiful. My husband also agrees with me that they are indeed beautiful (^_^)

After I finished my one bra and two panties, it turned out that there were still have leftover fabric for one more bra! Next time I need to find good local resources in Japan for lingerie making. I want to make more!

Sewing lingerie!

Panties

Lace panties

Today I finally tried my hands on lingerie making. I still have to finish the bra but I’m already too excited not to share the pretty panties now!

I’ve been wanting to learn to make my own lingerie but always thought that they were too difficult. I’ve made several cotton panties before, but not something as ‘serious’ as bra and lace panties. Until one day, a nice lady named Millie left a comment in one of my post, which led me to to check out her blog, where I found this inspiring post about the basics of bra making. One thing really led to another, internet is such a wonderful thing, isn’t it?

Millie also has put together a comprehensive list of interesting and useful links for bra making, where I found ElingerieA, a supply shop that sells lingerie supplies. After several days of obsessing over bra and lingerie stuff, I finally bought the Bra kit white/mandarin and a bra pattern that will be posted later. These panties were made with supplies from the kit but the pattern was bought from Merckwaerdigh at Etsy.

I was very anxious before cutting the fabric and the pretty lace, afraid of making unbearable mistake. But everything went well, and sewing the panties turned out to be not as difficult as I have imagined. This one was finished in under an hour. I still made a few mistakes though, like not setting the right stitch length, but nothing too fatal.

How about the fit? I wish I was brave enough to show you, but this time I can only offer you my words, the panties were perfect! Not too mention that they were oh so beautiful. Next I will go to the more difficult stuff, bra making. Hope it will turn as pretty as these panties!
