Meeting Yoshimi

Do you recognize these bags? Yes, on the right side is my bag, and the pretty bag with rosettes is Yoshimi’s bag! They were sitting together side by side on a wooden bench inside an Indonesian restaurant in Shinjuku. Yoshimi and I spent a day together  last Saturday, it was a bit cold and cloudy day but I was very happy to see her! We’ve met several times before to go fabric shopping, this time we just had a good time walking around Shinjuku area. We planned to have lunch in a deli, but then Yoshimi mentioned about Indonesian restaurant […]

Searching for Meaning in a Throwaway World

Mark Frauenfelder, the founder of BoingBoing.net and the editor in chief of Make magazine has just launched a new book yesterday: ‘Made by Hand: Searching for Meaning in a Throwaway World‘. I had the chance to read an uncorrected proof before it was launched and it was quite an enjoyable experience. This is not the book if you’re looking for tutorials or DIY projects. It is rather a chronicle of Mark’s journey to find what DIY means to him. Like many people, he had this romantic idea of living in remote island, and he even had the chance to fulfill […]

Wardrobe inventory

There is an interesting project going on at Zoe’s blog where she would only wear her own handmade clothes for a month. Last month, Zoe challenged herself in the Me-Made-March where she posted her daily handmade outfit and how she coordinated them. And this month, she invited other people to participate. So if you want to participate, you should check it out now because Me-Made-May is about to start, like, in the next couple of days! I think it’s really a wonderful idea because then we could see how much sewing has taken part in our daily life. Is it merely […]

Hat giveaway winner!

And now, here’s the winner of my hat giveaway, randomly selected: Congratulations, Emer! I will send you an email after this. Thank you everyone for participating in my giveaway! It has been fun!

Hat giveaway! – CLOSED

Remember this hat? I made it for a friend of mine but then I changed my mind and made another type of hat for her. I’ve never worn the hat since it is not really my style. So now that I have one extra hat, I think that maybe one of you will like to have it! The fabrics are linen with printed cotton for lining. The hat has short tilted down brim and elastic on the back, so it will fit most head sizes. The brooch is included! It is made with felt, cotton lace,  scrap of the printed […]

Lesson bag and shoes bag

This is Sidra this morning, about to go to his first day in second grade. I can’t believe how fast time is flying! He was entering first grade not so long time ago and now he’s suddenly a second-grade student. The school will finish early today, so he didn’t have to bring his randoseru (school bag). I made him those new lesson bag and uwabaki (inside shoes) bag yesterday. The fabric is grey cotton with robot print by Kokka, leftover from Sidra’s robot bag. I made it two years ago when he’s still in kindergarten. The fabric wasn’t that much, but I […]

Herakuresu

You know, we actually have pet in the house, although I rarely talked about it. But we’ve almost never seen it around because it is living in a plastic box buried under a heap of soil. In fact, it hardly can be called a pet at all, because we can’t, you know, pet it or play with it. The only thing we can do is watching it while it’s growing. Anyway, meet our pet: a Colombian Hercules beetle larva! Sidra calls it ‘Herakuresu’, which is simply how the word ‘Hercules’ said in Japanese. He’s crazy about all these kabuto (rhino […]

Fashion treasure

Do you have a fashion treasure? This coat is one of mine. It used to belong to my mother, she bought it in a small shop in France more than thirty years ago when she and my father went for a trip around Europe. The coat is unlined blue and white purl knit, the white pattern is consisted of white chains inserted between. It also has a a pair of big pockets, perfect for the cold hands, and thick mother-of-pearl buttons. Once my mother was back from the trip, the coat had no use in the tropical climate of Indonesia […]

New sewing machine!

The bad news is, my Janome Agneau d’Or Y101 is now officially dead. We took it to a Janome dealer last week, a little shop in a nice small street. A nice woman greeted us and she gasped when we showed her a piece of fabric with loopy stitches on it.  She then tried to move the wheel but it was stuck. It wasn’t stuck before! We told her about my sewing ‘habit’, she seemed impressed and asked permission to take some pictures of things that I made and worn that day, my dress and pencil pouch, Sidra’s jacket and […]
