Soil change for our larva!

P1150498

Warning: wriggly thing pictures ahead!

Colombian Hercules beetle larva, age: almost one year

This morning, the three of us woke up in excitement  because today was the soil change day for our larva! It can only be done every 3-4 months, so this occasion is something that we are always waiting for. It has been almost a year since we bought the larva, and today is the third soil change.

The larva is growing slower now, the size is just a little bit bigger than the last time (March 2010), but the body is  a lot firmer. It also moved a lot when I held it, and when I put him on Sidra’s hand, it bit Sidra’s hand! I took it from Sidra’s hand and it bit my palm too! The larva has a pair of little mandibles that are used for digging the soil. I guess he was trying to ‘dig’ on Sidra’s and my hand. It was just a little pinch though, no serious damage has done.

My husband still refused to touch the larva, he said that he couldn’t touch it because he was busy taking pictures. Owkay. But I know that deep down his [...]

One shoulder dress

So I’ve said that I won’t make any floral for sometime, but it turned out that I still have 1.35 m of this floral fabric in my stash, so I made a one shoulder dress for myself.

Initially it was cut for a ruffled collar dress, but then I got kinda bored of making it again.  I just made diagonal lines and cut one shoulder off. The ruffles is a wide strip of fabric, then an elastic is inserted inside the top line. I also use selvedges of fabric as hem and edge of the ruffles, no need to finish them!

The dress has already been worn last weekend when we went to Indonesian festival in Yoyogi. We came for the food, but the lines were so long and it was such a hot day, so we didn’t really enjoy being there. Sidra seemed a bit confused, ‘Why are there so many people speaking Indonesian?’

There was a choir singing ‘Rayuan Pulau Kelapa’, an old post-independence song. Usually the younger generation doesn’t really care for it, it was only sung at school events and of course in Indonesian events in other countries. Having to left Indonesia in a [...]

to Novita Estiti – from Mamad

We met for the first time on July 12, 2007, after 1.5 years of email exchange. He gave me a handmade card with a little poem on the backside.

Sometime later, I recalled my feeling when I saw his face for the first time and wrote the passage below:

“A smile on a certain face. You were looking up at the face and waiting for it to come down to you. All it needed was only 3 seconds to reach you, but it felt so long yet so soon. You remember every details. The cheeks were a bit pinkish, and you thought that was oh so cute. The corners of his eyes moved as he was smiling, as if his eyes were smiling too. No, not only his eyes, but his face, his body, his whole being were smiling to you. Only to you.

Everything around you receded to a distance as if they were making a space for the two of you. You waited happily at the feet of the stairs in what felt like forever. If you’d had a tail, you’d be wagging it excitedly. The feeling was so strangely [...]

Shop update and my progress on the Burdastyle Book project

I’ve just finished putting all my stuff in the shop! Please check it out and if you’re a petite, there might be something for you there!

:: SHOP ::

You see that stripes fabric on the picture? The colors remind me of peanut butter and strawberry jam! The fabric is shantung silk that Burdastyle sent me for the Burdastyle Book project. It’s a bit different from what I have in mind, but I think the texture and colours are very pretty. I’ve never worked with this kind of fabric, so I kinda feel excited and nervous at the same time.

Now that I have the fabrics, thread, and pattern, all I have to do is start working on my blouse! But I’ve been slacking around these last couple of days, doing nothing but browsing on pretty sites. I need to pull myself together now and start. Maybe today I will… print the pattern. Then I can get some rest after that with the feeling that I have made a progress in my [...]

Yokohama Artist Market

Artist market (picture taken by Sidra)

And how many clothes that I had sold? None!

Hahaha. Well, actually a lot of people came by and took a look at the clothes, but there were no fitting room to try them on. I think the market is better suited for small stuff like bags and accessories that don’t need sizings.

Another problem was that my clothes are small, because they are all in my size! I know, I know, that’s very selfish to only make clothes in one’s own size. But I can’t make clothes without seeing how it would look like on human body, and the only woman’s body around in the house is my own. Not to mention that I always secretly want the clothes for myself. -.-

Some people even came to our booth more than once because they really liked the clothes and wanted to try them on. I knew that they wouldn’t fit in my clothes but I suggested them to try the clothes anyway in the rest room so they could be sure. And of course they didn’t fit in the clothes.

I have [...]
