Reversible bag pattern

A reversible bag!A reversible bag!Just a quick post to tell you that I’ve made a PDF pattern of my reversible bag. It has rounded bottom with a couple of darts on the side.

Link for download is at the end of this post. The instruction for making the bag is also available in PDF file, or go to this post to read it in my site.

I have a question about the reversible bag. First of all, it’s adorable! :o ) I bought some quilted fabric that is soooo cute and it has two different sides. One side has leafs and branches and the other is polka dot, but the colors are the same. I wanted to know if I could make this bag, but my fabric already has two sides, so how would I make it because I don’t need a second pattern since it’s already on the other side. Would I just cut out the pattern and then just stitch it together? Thanks for your time! I can’t wait to try and make this!

    • verypurpleperson says:

Hi Stacy, you can do that but you have to find a way to finish the raw edge around the bag strap and the seam allowance on the bottom and sides of the bag. Maybe you can use binding for the strap and flat-felled seam for the seam allowance. Hope that helps!

I LOVE this pattern. I made it once but because I like larger bags I scaled up the pattern to make a larger bag. The instructions are very clear which for a beginner sewer is always appreciated. Thanks so much!

    Hello
The pattern shows two lines a fine one and thick black one. Which line do I use for cutting it out? Thank you B.

    • verypurpleperson says:

The thick one. The fine one is the stitching line.

      • meredith ashworth says:

If one cuts the pattern out on the thick line, the thin line will be totally gone and you will be making your seam inside of the thick line. It would be a very small bag…
I extended the length of the strap for a longer purse. I love it !

        • Cat says:

What I would do it cut out pattern around the thick line then use the template to mark out the stitch line, cutting out the fabric say 1/4″ wider. Not sure if this is how it was intended though.

    • verypurpleperson says:

      You’re welcome, Erin!
My favourite part is turning the bag right sides out too. It looks like a pointless crumpled fabric and suddenly it becomes a bag! :D

  32. Victoria says:

Hi – awesome bag. I tried to make one for a friend, I can’t for the life of me get it to turn out when I pull through the handles. I end up with a bag stuck inside a bag? Are you able to elaborate a bit more on the turn out process? thank you

    • verypurpleperson says:

      Hi Victoria,
Sometimes I encounter the same problem when the fabric is too thick. I suggest to make more opening on the straps (more than 20 cm as suggested in the tutorial). If the bag is already stuck inside, you can try unpick the stitches carefully to make wider opening. You can also try trimming the seam allowance in the strap a bit to make it less bulky. I really hope you will able to make it!

  33. Raine says:

Oooh I saw this bag a few days ago and was just about to attempt to make a pattern but yay! you posted one, really well put together pattern and tutorial thanks so much for sharing, can’t wait to try making it :)

Thanks so much for sharing this awesome pattern! I made one for myself yesterday – your instructions were very easy to follow, though I did make a mistake with the straps and have to correct it. I love it!!! Thanks!!!

    • verypurpleperson says:

I made mistakes when sewing that straps all the time! It feels so natural when sewing them to the other side, but it turned out the wrong way *sigh*

  39. Tami says:

Thank you for the wonderful pattern, Novita! I’ve been wondering how to make this style bag. Your pattern is so perfect; do you mind sharing what software program you use to make this awesome pattern? I’m interested in making baby patterns for my sister-in-law. Thanks again!

    • verypurpleperson says:

      Hi Tami,
I use CorelDraw to make the pattern. It’s a vector software similar to Adobe Illustrator, and it’s not really a drafting software. It’s just that I’m familiar with the software to make illustrations in another time of my life :)
